    Cross-collaborative supply chains. How logistics services contribute to social responsibility.

    Abstract Purpose - The collaboration between profit and nonprofit entities has become a burning topic in supply chain management studies and corporate strategies. The world’s largest logistics service providers (LSPs) have been developing several practices improving social responsibility while collaborating with nonprofit actors. In particular, their core competences and offered services become extremely relevant in the context of humanitarian logistics initiatives. A key purpose of this article is to examine the projects currently undertaken by LSPs in humanitarian logistics. Methodology/Approach - This research follows a qualitative approach based on multiple case studies. Findings - The paper provides an overview of the leading LSPs’ involvement in humanitarian logistics and presents an analysis of their current “best practices” services in disaster relief with high impact in terms of social responsibility. Research Limitations/implications - There has been increased interest on the part of international academic and professional communities in humanitarian logistics. This study constitutes a platform for benchmarking analysis of logistics services to assure effective implementation of social responsibility principles. Originality/Value of paper - Humanitarian logistics is a rather new field in logistics management.     Sustainable supply chain management needs sustainable logistics services. The strategic role played by logistics service providers

    Purpose – The purpose of this research is to examine the concept of sustainable service co-creation in triadic business relationships in logistics and supply chain management. More companies seek to develop sustainable solutions that would not be sustainable exclusively for themselves but for the supply chain they belong to. In doing that – especially when dealing with services – they may need the external support from logistics service providers (LSPs). This paper aims to explore the innovative initiatives undertaken by LSPs in triadic relationship management with their customers and suppliers while co-creating sustainable services along the supply chain. Design/methodology/approach – To investigate the research question, a systematic literature review and empirical exploratory investigation through case study will be conducted adopting the qualitative methodology, to explore trends and evolving paradigms. Findings – A literature review conducted in this paper enriches existing literature through an integration of sustainability in a viable system approach and logistics service provision, in particular, it investigates the ways in which sustainability is achieved. It is assumed that the triadic relationship among an LSP and its customers and suppliers requires significant modifications in collaboration and an innovative approach in operating procedures. Research limitations/implications – This paper is an exploratory study and limited in its scope to an example of a relationship that focuses mainly on three actors: the supplier, the LSP and the customer. However, it could be extended in terms of numbers of case studies investigated. Practical implications – The implications arising from the literature and the empirical research offer a range of current sustainable practices in the services sector. This could be a starting point for other research and company activities. Originality/value – There is little research that addresses the issue of sustainability and logistics service providers simultaneously, hence the present paper is meant to fill the gap by providing a foundation which actors of different supply chains could use as a benchmark.     Reporting di sostenibilitĂ  degli operatori logistici in Europa: analisi degli indicatori

    Obiettivi: L’affermazione di una nuova concezione del valore, basata sulle qualità e non sull’insostenibile aumento delle quantità di merci e consumi, induce gli operatori logistici alla ricerca di azioni che possano essere nel contempo economicamente efficienti ed efficaci, ecologicamente sopportabili e socialmente giuste. Il presente lavoro ha l’obiettivo di investigare e identificare le azioni sostenibili - economiche, ambientali e sociali - intraprese dagli operatori logistici. Metodologia: Il quadro teorico è stato costruito attraverso lo studio della letteratura accademica nazionale e internazionale. La parte empirica è stata sviluppata attraverso l’analisi dei più recenti report di sostenibilità degli operatori logistici operanti in Europa, redatti secondo gli standard della Global Reporting Initiative. Risultati: Gli operatori logistici possono contribuire in modo significativo al cambiamento paradigmatico in atto, facilitando e favorendo, in qualità di fornitori di servizi, il raggiungimento della sostenibilità della supply chain. Limiti della ricerca: Il presente lavoro costituisce la fase preliminare di un più approfondito progetto di ricerca che indaghi le iniziative di sostenibilità degli operatori logistici a livello mondiale e che consideri un arco temporale di osservazione utile a tracciare il trend in atto. Implicazioni pratiche: Sia l’accademia che il mondo professionale possono trovare utile l’analisi della letteratura sul tema e i primi risultati ottenuti, in quanto sono posti in evidenzia i principali tratti di sostenibilità degli operatori logistici che già hanno intrapreso il percorso verso la sostenibilità. Originalità del lavoro: Gli studi della letteratura esistente sugli operatori logistici e la sostenibilità si basano quasi esclusivamente sulla sostenibilità ambientale e l’ecoefficienza, mentre manca un approccio sistemico capace di superare i problemi odierni mediante la valorizzazione della multidimensionalità.     An epistatic mini-circuitry between the transcription factors Snail and HNF4a controls liver stem cell and hepatocyte features exhorting opposite regulation on stemness-inhibiting microRNAs

    Preservation of the epithelial state involves the stable repression of EMT program while maintenance of the stem compartment requires the inhibition of differentiation processes. A simple and direct molecular mini-circuitry between master elements of these biological processes, may provide the best device to keep balanced such complex phenomena. In this work, we show that in hepatic stem cell Snail, a transcriptional repressor of the hepatocyte differentiation master gene HNF4, directly represses the expression of the epithelial microRNAs-200c and -34a, which in turn target several stem cell genes. Notably, in differentiated hepatocytes HNF4, previously identified as a transcriptional repressor of Snail, induces the microRNAs-34a and -200a, b, c that, when silenced, causes epithelial dedifferentiation and reacquisition of stem traits. Altogether these data unveiled Snail, HNF4 and microRNAs -200a, b, c and -34a as epistatic elements controlling hepatic stem cell maintenance/differentiation

    YAP integrates the regulatory Snail/HNF4α circuitry controlling epithelial/hepatocyte differentiation

    Yes-associated protein (YAP) is a transcriptional co-factor involved in many cell processes, including development, proliferation, stemness, differentiation, and tumorigenesis. It has been described as a sensor of mechanical and biochemical stimuli that enables cells to integrate environmental signals. Although in the liver the correlation between extracellular matrix elasticity (greatly increased in the most of chronic hepatic diseases), differentiation/functional state of parenchymal cells and subcellular localization/activation of YAP has been previously reported, its role as regulator of the hepatocyte differentiation remains to be clarified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of YAP in the regulation of epithelial/hepatocyte differentiation and to clarify how a transducer of general stimuli can integrate tissue-specific molecular mechanisms determining specific cell outcomes. By means of YAP silencing and overexpression we demonstrated that YAP has a functional role in the repression of epithelial/hepatocyte differentiation by inversely modulating the expression of Snail (master regulator of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and liver stemness) and HNF4α (master regulator of hepatocyte differentiation) at transcriptional level, through the direct occupancy of their promoters. Furthermore, we found that Snail, in turn, is able to positively control YAP expression influencing protein level and subcellular localization and that HNF4α stably represses YAP transcription in differentiated hepatocytes both in cell culture and in adult liver. Overall, our data indicate YAP as a new member of the HNF4/Snail epistatic molecular circuitry previously demonstrated to control liver cell state. In this model, the dynamic balance between three main transcriptional regulators, that are able to control reciprocally their expression/activity, is responsible for the induction/maintenance of different liver cell differentiation states and its modulation could be the aim of therapeutic protocols for several chronic liver diseases

    Horizontal network collaboration by entrepreneurial ventures: a supply chain finance perspective

    Purpose – The present paper aims at understanding how horizontal network collaborations between small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can be designed and implemented to take advantage of a supply chain finance (SCF) perspective. Design/methodology/approach – This study presents an SCF literature background identifying four literature gaps, and in response to them it adopts an action research approach. The empirical analysis is developed on a network-case study: a horizontal collaboration project between small businesses of the Italian wine industry and their supply chains. Findings – SMEs can play an active role in developing – in terms of design and implementation – their collaborative networks by taking advantage of an SCF perspective for themselves, and their customers, based on the reorganization of relationships interface processes. Taking this perspective can be a concrete and crucial way to sustain the development of SMEs and their supply chains in an actual competitive context. Research limitations/implications – The paper identifies the theoretical gaps in the literature, suggests new research areas that deserve to be more deeply investigated and connects case-related results to the key concepts. The empirical part presents a real case application that proposes a complete roadmap for managers and practitioners who wish to experience similar projects. Practical implications – This network-case study storyline, presenting an overview of ten years of meetings, with related purposes, is suggesting a roadmap for design and implementation of horizontal network as managerial implications. These kinds of active research projects, with a collaborative mixed team of academics and practitioners, and involving a multilayer group of participants, are positive examples for closing the bridge between companies and academia, which enhance this network of small businesses active in trying to improve their competitiveness working together. Originality/value – The value of the paper is to embrace a supply chain-oriented perspective for an SME, independent of the financial system and based on inventory flow management. Very little literature focuses on inventory-based research within the SCF framework, designed for real implementation in horizontal network collaboration by entrepreneurial ventures

    Promising Perspectives on the Use of Fullerenes as Efficient Containers for Beryllium Atoms

    The possibility of using fullerenes as containers for toxic beryllium atoms is studied by a multi-scale approach in which first-principles and classical molecular dynamics simulations are combined. By studying the energetics, electronic and spectroscopic properties of Be-fullerene systems and by simulating their interaction at finite temperature in vacuo and in representative biological environments it is concluded that: i) Be endohedral complexes can be obtained by implanting Be atoms at energies >2.3 eV that is consistent with laser implantation technologies; ii) it is in principle possible to distinguish stable endohedral complexes from metastable exohedral ones by optical absorption, suggesting that optical spectroscopy can be a valuable a non-destructive technique to assist the synthesis and the control of implanted films iii) the Be-endohedral complexes are long-lived and thermodynamically stable and can confine beryllium both in vacuo and in aqueous solution; iv) Be@C60 complexes are likely unable to penetrate the selectivity filters of a prototypical protein showing that fullerene prevents undesired interactions with biomolecules and toxicity effects of Be2+ related to replacement of the Ca2+. Overall, these results provide an assessment on the possibility to encapsulate Be atoms into fullerenes by ion implantation to synthesize inert and highly stable and safe molecular containers for toxic beryllium radionuclides. Great opportunities are expected for the realization and application of Be-C60 complexes to nanotechnology and nanomedicine with particularly appealing perspectives in the field of neutron capture therapy of cancer

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa Exploits Lipid A and Muropeptides Modification as a Strategy to Lower Innate Immunity during Cystic Fibrosis Lung Infection

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa can establish life-long airways chronic infection in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) with pathogenic variants distinguished from initially acquired strain. Here, we analysed chemical and biological activity of P. aeruginosa Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs) in clonal strains, including mucoid and non-mucoid phenotypes, isolated during a period of up to 7.5 years from a CF patient. Chemical structure by MS spectrometry defined lipopolysaccharide (LPS) lipid A and peptidoglycan (PGN) muropeptides with specific structural modifications temporally associated with CF lung infection. Gene sequence analysis revealed novel mutation in pagL, which supported lipid A changes. Both LPS and PGN had different potencies when activating host innate immunity via binding TLR4 and Nod1. Significantly higher NF-kB activation, IL-8 expression and production were detected in HEK293hTLR4/MD2-CD14 and HEK293hNod1 after stimulation with LPS and PGN respectively, purified from early P. aeruginosa strain as compared to late strains. Similar results were obtained in macrophages-like cells THP-1, epithelial cells of CF origin IB3-1 and their isogenic cells C38, corrected by insertion of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). In murine model, altered LPS structure of P. aeruginosa late strains induces lower leukocyte recruitment in bronchoalveolar lavage and MIP-2, KC and IL-1β cytokine levels in lung homogenates when compared with early strain. Histopathological analysis of lung tissue sections confirmed differences between LPS from early and late P. aeruginosa. Finally, in this study for the first time we unveil how P. aeruginosa has evolved the capacity to evade immune system detection, thus promoting survival and establishing favourable conditions for chronic persistence. Our findings provide relevant information with respect to chronic infections in CF

    Processing and characterization of durum wheat bread enriched with antioxidant from yellow pepper flour

    The effect of the addition of yellow pepper flour on bread physico-chemical and sensorial properties was addressed in this study. In particular, vegetable flour concentration was set at 25%; in order to optimize the bread sensorial properties, yellow pepper flour was separately hydrated at three different water content levels. Texture analysis were carried out on both dough and bread samples to evaluate their firmness. Furthermore, tomographic analysis was performed on the same samples in order to provide a more detailed view of their texture. Estimation of the glycemic response, determination of the carotenoids content and sensory analysis of the fortified bread were also determined. Results highlighted that the highest glycemic index was achieved in bread sample having the highest water content and that showed the worst results in terms of texture. Among the studied samples, bread with medium hydration level showed good structural characteristic, double anti-oxidant content compared to the control bread (CTRL S) and the highest sensorial quality
